Los vencedores escriben los libros de historia, hablando de conquistas y choques culturales desde su propio punto de vista. A veces es imposible adivinar qué pasó verdaderamente, pero, usando la evidencia histórica y los métodos antropológicos, podemos atisbar, por lo menos, cómo ocurrió un episodio. Es eso lo que he intentado aquí con la primera gran batalla ocurrida entre los europeos y los amerindio—la batalla del Santo Cerro, en marzo de 1495.
El 14 de marzo de 1495, el Almirante, Gobernador y Virrey Cristóbal Colón y 200 soldados de la infantería española, 20 jinetes españoles también armados, y un número indefinido de indios taínos aliados—los hombres del Cacique Guacanagaríx [1]--arribaron al lugar conocido como el Santo Cerro, un pequeño poblado al noroeste de la actual ciudad de La Vega, en la República Dominicana. Ellos habían salido del pueblo de La Isabela, en la costa norte, y habían marchado a través del Paso de los Hidalgos en ruta hacia el cacicazgo principal de Guarionex, en el corazón del Cibao montañoso y fecundo en oro. [2] Cuánto duró esta marcha es algo que los registros que han supervivido no nos dicen. Los indios en el grupo probablemente superaban en número a sus aliados españoles en el orden de cinco a uno, algo que resultó común más tarde en las batallas de la historia americana: los europeos se llevaron todo el crédito en las historias que contaron sobre las batallas acontecidas, minimizando la parte jugada por los Indios aliados o excluyéndolos completamente de la historia oficial.
La meta del ejército español y los guerreros taínos dirigidos por Colón consistía en eliminar el creciente número de ataques de los indios contra los españoles. El “pacífico” taíno se había rebelado contra el impuesto de un tributo bianual en oro ordenado por Colón. Caonabó, el cacique taíno que había dado más problemas a los españoles hasta entonces, había sido capturado recientemente y embarcado en una nave para ser juzgado en España. (Caonabó, quien murió en la embarcación antes de llegar a Europa, [3] era el líder de los taínos que habían masacrado a 39 hombres a quienes Colón había dejado en el Fuerte La Navidad en su primer viaje.) A pesar de la captura de Caonabó, los ataques contra los españoles habían aumentado en lugar de detenerse. Maniocatex, uno de los hermanos del cacique, dirigía ahora los ataques desde el cacicazgo de Guarionex, tributario de Maguá, cacicazgo de Caonabó.
Además de contrarrestar los ataques, Colón quería establecer un bastión firme en la región donde estaba el oro, donde hasta entonces, los españoles apenas tenían una pequeña fortificación, el Fuerte Santo Tomás, en el río Jánico. (Tal nombre, dado por la famosa incredulidad bíblica de Santo Tomás, [4] fue la respuesta de Colón a quienes expresaban públicamente sus dudas de que pudiera hallarse mucho oro en la Hispaniola.)
Los españoles escogieron el Santo Cerro para establecer su avanzada contra los rebeldes tainos, porque este lugar les proveía una vista clara del Valle de La Vega Real, a sus pies, y porque el mismo era relativamente fácil de defender. Este cerro es una alta y escarpada montaña en el extremo noreste de la vasta cadena de montañas llamada Cordillera Central. Desde la cima del Santo Cerro, se domina visualmente todo el Valle de La Vega Real, de aproximadamente 24 kilómetros de ancho en ese lugar.
Terrible sería la vista que aguardaba a Colón y sus hombres cuando miraran hacia la sima del valle en la madrugada del 14 de marzo de 1495. Los informes varían, y los números probablemente fueron creciendo con el tiempo, como a menudo ocurre con las batallas legendarias, pero alrededor de 30,000 guerreros taínos, entre las fuerzas combinadas de Maniocatex y Guarionex, se congregaron al pie del Santo Cerro, listos para enfrentar a los españoles y a los hombres de Guacanagaríx. Hubo testigos que dijeron que “había indios hasta donde alcanzaba la vista.”
Los españoles descendieron para batirse y, a pesar de sus más de mil aliados, su caballería, sus arcabuces, y sus avanzadas estrategias de combate--pulidas durante los 800 años de lucha contra los moros en España--no pudieron avanzar significativamente contra los guerreros tainos. Superados en número y en la práctica, los españoles y sus aliados indígenas eran repelidos una y otra vez hacia lo alto de la montaña. Las fuentes no se ponen de acuerdo sobre cuántos días duró la batalla.
Parece que tras unos 10 días (25 de marzo, 1495), Colón ordenó a sus hombres que se refugiaran en un palenque, área empalizada en la cima de la montaña que él mismo había ordenado construir a sus aliados indios. Allí Colón había ordenado hacer una cruz de la madera de un árbol de níspero [5] donde los españoles oraron por el triunfo el próximo día, del cual creían que sería el último para ellos, ya que sus aliados indígenas habían sido heridos, estaban muertos, o habían desertado. Esa noche, según declararon los testigos, los españoles pidieron e imploraron, temiendo el ocaso y la muerte, la cual estaban seguros les aguardaba.
La inminente derrota fue evitada por una serie de milagros que ocurrieron durante la noche, según los testigos oculares. Poco después del anochecer, los indios enemigos trataron de quemar la cruz de los españoles, pero sólo pudieron chamuscarla, a pesar de toda la leña que apilaron. Al fracasar en quemar el símbolo cristiano, trataron de derrumbar la cruz, usando sogas de la planta llamada bejuco, pero tampoco pudieron lograrlo. Frustrados, trataron de cortar la cruz con sus hachas de piedra, pero fallaron de nuevo.
El fraile Juan Infante, de la Orden de los Mercedarios, era el confesor personal de Colón. El no sólo fue testigo de todos los ataques anteriores de los indios, sino que presenció un evento mucho más milagroso. Cerca de las 9 de la noche, afirmó haber visto una luz que descendía y arropaba la cruz, mientras una dama vestida toda de blanco, con un niño en sus brazos, aparecía en el brazo derecho de la cruz. El declaró que la Virgen de las Mercedes había venido a salvar a los españoles—en España, ella es la patrona de las personas privadas de su libertad. Ciertamente pareció que él tenía razón. En la mañana, cuando las exhaustas y asustadas tropas españolas se levantaron, listas para descender de la montaña para la batalla final, ¡no encontraron con quien pelear! ¡Los indios enemigos se habían marchado! Colón ordenó a sus hombres arrodillarse y orar en agradecimiento de la Virgen de las Mercedes por su milagrosa victoria y para construir una fortaleza al pie del Santo Cerro, distante apenas unas millas del principal centro poblado del cacique Guarionex. [6]
Así es como la historia de la batalla del Santo Cerro, y la leyenda de la Virgen de las Mercedes, nos ha llegado en la historia. Pero, como todos sabemos, los vencedores escriben las historias y rara vez incluyen el punto de vista del “otro,” en este caso los enemigos taínos, quienes no nos dejaron una relación escrita por ellos del acontecimiento. Como antropóloga que se especializa en la historia y la cultura de los taínos, sin embargo, creo que los eventos previamente descritos podrían ser explicados desde una perspectiva menos eurocéntrica. Tal batalla, la primera confrontación suficientemente importante entre europeos y amerindios, fue un choque no sólo de guerreros y armamentos, sino de tradiciones y creencias. Los taínos no sabían que los españoles pelearían hasta la muerte, o por lo menos hasta que uno de los contrincantes se rindiera oficialmente y se negociara un tratado, que explicitara los términos de la conquista y de la derrota. Asimismo, los españoles no sabían que los taínos peleaban (aunque raramente) hasta que uno de los adversarios fuera claramente el vencedor—no se necesitaba una rendición escrita ni un tratado oficial. Quién estaba ganando era algo bastante evidente para todos, de manera que la batalla terminó, y ambas parte regresaron a sus hogares a vivir sus vidas cotidianas.
En el Santo Cerro a finales de marzo de 1495, parece que tanto unos como otros creyeron que habían ganado la batalla. Maniocatex y Guarionex, sabiendo que ellos eran los evidentes vencedores, habiendo repelido a los aliados de los españoles y forzado a éstos a retirarse hacia la montaña tan alto como pudieron, sencillamente se fueron a sus casas la noche que terminó la batalla, como era su costumbre—los ataques a la cruz pueden haber sido un gesto simbólico de desprecio o podría aun haber sido perpetrado por algunos de los mismos descorazonados aliados taínos de los españoles, antes de marcharse a casa. Cuando los españoles despertaron ante un campo de batalla vacío al amanecer, sin embargo, supusieron que los taínos se habían retirado. En cuanto a la cruz indestructible, sugiero que Colón no cortó un árbol de níspero para plantar la famosa cruz, sino que hizo la cruz de un árbol vivo arraigado profundamente en la tierra, y por tanto, difícil de tumbar—mientras su madera verde y viviente sería difícil de quemar, o de cortar con hachas de piedra. La luz blanca y el descenso de la Virgen en un brazo de la cruz, que sólo vio Fray Juan Infante, creo que se trata de intentos sinceros de explicar—muy probablemente de manera retrospectiva—el triunfo milagroso de los españoles sobre los guerreros taínos.
No se tienen detalles de los próximos días o semanas. Debe haber habido más combates, ya que Colón y sus hombres ocuparon el centro poblado más importante de Guarionex y construyeron allí el Fuerte de la Concepción de la Vega. El fuerte se convirtió rápidamente en el núcleo de una ciudad al estilo europeo, centro de la incipiente industria minera del oro de la isla, hasta que un terremoto la destruyó el 2 de noviembre de 1564. [7] ¿Cómo pudieron los españoles dar tal golpe? Mi hipótesis es que Guarionex fue sorprendido fuera de guardia, al pensar que la batalla había terminado, y Maniocatex y sus guerreros habían regresado a Maguá. Es posible, igualmente, que con tantos españoles en la vecindad durante más de 10 días, los taínos del Cibao comenzaran a sentir los síntomas de enfermedades para las cuales no tenían inmunidad natural, por lo cual no opondrían gran resistencia. Hacia 1508, año en que la Corona Real española otorgó su sello real a la ciudad, la Concepción de la Vega Real era más grande y populosa que la ciudad de Santo Domingo, y en 1511 fue elevada a obispado. (El célebre Bartolomé de las Casas, un religioso dominico y Protector Real de los Indios, celebró su primera misa allí.) La Vega continuó teniendo una población más cuantiosa que la capital hasta que fue abandonada en 1564, año en que fue destruida por el mencionado terremoto. Para este tiempo, el oro fácilmente asequible se había agotado. La Vega fue reubicada en el lugar actual, a unos cuantos kilómetros al sudoeste.
Poco después de la milagrosa batalla del Santo Cerro en 1495, partes del madero de la cruz original que se atribuye a Colón haber plantado fue trozada en miles de pequeños fragmentos que fueron preservados en las iglesias de toda la isla. Algunos fragmentos fueron enviados a España, a Italia, y a otros países europeos, cotizándose a altos precios, ya que se decía que tenía poderes milagrosos—sólo había que tomarse una tizana de polvo del madero de la cruz sagrada para curarse de cualquier fiebre. Otra leyenda surgió conectada a la cruz y a la Virgen de las Mercedes: se decía que no importaba cuántas reliquias se tomaran de la cruz, otras tantas crecían para reemplazarlas. No se necesita ser un/a especialista para adivinar que la insaciabilidad humana era el origen de tal leyenda particular. Una pequeña ermita fue construida donde estuvo la cruz, y muchos/as de los/as feligreses/as hacían peregrinaciones al lugar, con la esperanza de ver un celaje de la virgen vestida de blanco, o por lo menos, pedir su intercesión en sus ruegos al Señor.
En 1880 fue construida la bella iglesia blanca que se yergue en la cima del Santo Cerro para reemplazar la pequeña ermita. El Santo Cerro aún es un lugar de peregrinación para los/as creyentes [8] y una atracción turística, especialmente en la fiesta del día de la Virgen de las Mercedes, el 24 de septiembre. La vista del Valle de La Vega Real desde un anfiteatro natural al aire libre en la cima es sobrecogedora. Un alto árbol de níspero crece al lado de la iglesia, con explicaciones escritas de que la cruz de Colón fue hecha de la madera de este árbol. Dentro de la iglesia, en una pequeña capilla al sur de la nave central, está un hoyo en la tierra donde una vez estuvo la cruz de Colón. El milagro debe haberse agotado finalmente, porque no quedan señales visibles del madero dentro del hoyo ni reliquias de la cruz que vender, aunque los devotos todavía acuden a buscar las bendiciones de la virgen. Astutos vendedores del pequeño poblado que ha crecido en la vecindad venden imágenes de la famosa Virgen de las Mercedes impresa en camisetas y estampitas, tallada en cruces en miniatura, además de botellas de agua fría, refrescos, comida rápida, y el pan especial de la región, la ojardra, hecha de almidón de yuca y especias, cocida en hornos peculiares con forma de panal de abejas.
La iglesia del Santo Cerro abre sus puertas diariamente de 9 AM a 6 PM, pero permanece cerrada entre el medio día y las 2 PM. Puede llegarse a ella desde la Autopista Duarte, girando al este como a un kilómetro o dos de la carretera que conduce de La Vega a Moca. Gire hacia el norte en el templo amarillo al pie de la montaña en el lado norte de la carretera (que marca el punto donde ocurrió la batalla) y siga la serpenteada carretera; y de ahí continúe hasta el pequeño poblado y el templo del Santo Cerro, a la izquierda. La entrada es gratis, pero por favor, recuerde que está en una iglesia católica y un templo sagrado; no se admiten pantalones cortos ni blusas reveladoras, pero se permite tomar fotografías.
Las ruinas de la ciudad original de la Concepción de la Vega Real se preservan ahora en el Parque Nacional de La Vega Vieja, abierto al público diariamente de 8:30 AM a 3:30 PM. Hay una tarifa oficial de admisión, que a veces no es cobrada, pero asegúrese de dar una propina generosa al guía por sus servicios. Las ruinas están ubicadas a ocho kilómetros al este de la Autopista Duarte, en la carretera que lleva de La Vega a Moca—deténgase y pregunte a los lugareños dónde está la entrada, ya que la señal que indica dónde girar es muy vieja y es difícil de notar. Las excavaciones y la restauración de las ruinas de la Concepción de la Vega comenzaron en 1976. Hay un pequeño museo en el lugar, con una colección de artefactos taínos y españoles que fueron extraídos durante el trabajo, aunque la mayor parte de los hallazgos están ahora en el Museo de las Casas Reales en la Capital.
El Fuerte de la Concepción original se encuentra excepcionalmente bien conservado, incluyendo las aperturas de las seis ventanas en forma de cruz (resulta irónico que tengan esa forma, ¿no?) que permitió a los españoles que estaban dentro disparar sus mosquetes y arcabuces a los indios que estaban afuera, mientras permanecían protegidos detrás de un grueso círculo de paredes de ladrillo y piedra. El resto de los edificios de la ciudad vieja, sin embargo, con la excepción del edificio de ladrillos que protegía el reservorio de agua de la comunidad, fueron demolidos por grandes terremotos en 1564 y 1842, tanto como por el paso del tiempo. Sólo quedan las zapatas y algunos montones sin excavar, pero es fácil percibir lo grande que era la ciudad. La principal zona residencial, ubicada donde una vez se encontraba la iglesia, continúa sin ser excavada porque sus propietarios (quienes viven en edificaciones construidas entre y sobre las ruinas) no han dado autorización para ello. Cerca de un kilómetro al oeste del parque nacional, en el extremo de la vasta ciudad española, descansan las ruinas del Monasterio Franciscano, que fue construido al lado de un gran cementerio taíno. Guías ávidos le mostrarán lo que ellos creen que fueron las diversas habitaciones del monasterio y levantarán las tapas de las tumbas para mostrarle los huesos esparcidos de los taínos enterrados en su acostumbrada posición fetal.

Guacanagarix era el cacique donde el buque insignia de Colón, la carabela Santa María, naufragó en los arrecifes de la costa la víspera Navidad de 1492. Guacanagarix fue el primer aliado amerindio de los españoles.

[7] Hoy las ruinas de la ciudad española original, llamada La Vega Vieja por los/as lugareños/as, son protegidas por los servicios de Parques Nacionales del país. La actual ciudad de La Vega está a pocos kilómetros al sudoeste.
[8] La Virgen de Altagracia, no obstante, cuya basílica está en Higüey, además de una iglesia en la Zona Colonial de Santo Domingo, ha desarrollado una feligresía más grande en los años recientes. Ella es la Patrona de la República Dominicana (en tanto la Virgen de las Mercedes es la Patrona de toda la isla) y su onomástico es un día feriado oficial en el país.
